During a bullpen session today, Volquez experianced back pain and after only a few pitches he went to Dusty Baker and told him he does not think he can make his next scheduled start which is on Saturday. The choice will probably be Ramon Ramirez, who is the long man in the bullpen since being called up for yesterdays game.
The Reds are now getting the injury bug just when things are starting go bad. They have lost 4 games in a row going into tonight and are missing their best hitter in Joey Votto who conitnues to undergo tests.
I think Homer Bailey may get his chance if Volquez's injury requires him to miss more starts, especially if Ramirez struggles Saturday. They will have to make a move if Volquez is going to miss another start because they are one short in the bullpen now with Ramirez going into the rotation. The obvious decision then would be to call up Bailey and keep Ramirez in the bullpen until Nick Massett comes off the DL.
